What Does It Mean to Have Faith in God’s Plan?

“God, where are You taking me?” Faith in God’s plan is rarely a straight one. I like clarity and certainty. God calls us to trust Him—even when the road is unclear. Trusting God’s plan is easier said than done. Especially when life feels uncertain or painful. But faith isn’t about knowing every step—it trusts the One who does. Faith in God’s plan means surrendering control. It is about releasing our grip on what we think should happen and trusting that His ways are better. Surrender is easy to type, but I honestly have to work at it every day.

Trust God’s Timing

The “now” culture we live in can make it hard for me to remember that God operates on a much different timeline than me. His delays aren’t denials—they’re often preparation. Abraham waited years for his promised son. Joseph spent over a decade as a slave and prisoner. David was anointed king but spent seasons hiding in caves before the crown became a reality. Their stories remind me that waiting is often where God does His most profound work in our hearts. I’ve experienced this firsthand as a mom. There were countless times I prayed for my kids—for their health, for their relationships, for their future. There were moments when I tried to control outcomes, stepping in to solve problems or make things happen on my timeline. But those were the moments I learned how much better God’s timing is. I’ve watched Him work in my kids’ lives in ways I couldn’t have orchestrated. So many times, I have wanted to fix it, to give them the answers, find the solutions, and solve the problems. Waiting on God’s timing isn’t easy, and I am not the best at it! But I have found it’s where my faith is strengthened.

Focus on God’s Character, Not Your Circumstances

What’s your response when life shakes you? God’s character is steady. He is good, loving, sovereign, and for us. Faith means clinging to who God is when we can’t see where He’s leading. It’s easy to let circumstances dictate our outlook, but true faith rests in knowing that God’s nature doesn’t change, even when life feels overwhelming. I’ve faced many moments when I questioned God’s plan. At times, life has shaken me to my core. Those times can leave me feeling isolated and insecure. It is in God’s steady, reliable, proven steadfastness that I find peace and comfort.  His character and nature are constant reminders of His love and faithfulness.

Obedience Builds Faith

Sometimes, faith means taking the next step even when we don’t see the full picture. Noah built the ark before rain ever fell. Abraham moved to an unknown land without knowing his destination. Their obedience was an act of faith, and it was through their obedience that they saw God’s faithfulness. As a mom, there have been moments when obedience felt risky. I remember feeling led to let my adult children make their own mistakes, even when everything in me wanted to step in and protect them. It didn’t make sense on paper, but I knew God was leading me to trust Him with their lives. Looking back, I see how those moments of letting go allowed them to grow. Obedience is rarely easy, but it builds our trust and helps us see God’s faithfulness more clearly.

Having faith in God’s plan doesn’t remove the struggle, but it does give us peace. Where do you need to surrender control and trust God’s next step today?
