How we see God is connected to how we see ourselves. By developing a more personal relationship with God, we can learn to see ourselves in a new light and embrace our identity. If we view God as distant or judgmental, we will see ourselves differently. Alternatively, if we see God as loving and compassionate, we are more likely to extend that same love and compassion to ourselves and others. The more time we spend getting to know Him, we also begin to find freedom in Him. I want to share three ways I see God and how that helps me in my mental health journey.
God is My Rest
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” Psalm 62:5
Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual journey, know that God is waiting for you with open arms. God is love, and the love of God is rest. It can be easy to lose sight of our identity and feel like we’re going through the motions in a world that is constantly pulling us in many different directions. But when we take a step back and connect with God, the Source of all love, we remember who we are. If you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, know that God is rest. Lean into that, take a moment, rest in Him. There is no greater peace than knowing you are loved. Find the rest your soul longs for in a relationship with Him.
God is My Helper
“So, we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:6
No matter what challenges we face in life, we can always find comfort in knowing God is our helper. He knows us better than anyone else and loves us unconditionally. When we turn to Him, He will give us the strength to overcome obstacles. He will also help us see our challenges in a new light, giving us clarity and wisdom. Additionally, God can help us find freedom from our past mistakes and hurts. He allows us to move through the shame. In my case, He is using my past experiences to help others along the way. We can rest assured that God will always be there to help us.
God is My Confidence
“For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.” Psalm 71:5
We live in a world that is constantly changing and often feels unpredictable. In uncertainty, it can be easy to lose sight of who we are and what we stand for. However, when we turn to God, we can find the unshakable foundation. As our confidence, God gives us the strength to face our fears and the freedom to be who He has called us to be. In Him, we discover our identity and the power to live boldly for His purposes. No matter what life throws our way, we can trust that God will never leave us or forsake us. He is our ever-present help in times of trouble, and He will always be our confidence.
We all face challenges in this life. It can be easy to allow our challenges to define us. We can start to believe that we are our challenges. But, that is not true. Our identity is found in Christ. He is our freedom. In Him, we are no longer bound by our challenges. Because He defines us, we can face our challenges with confidence. We can rest in the knowledge that we are His. So, whatever challenge you may be facing today, remember that you loved.
God is your rest, your help, and your confidence.
You are a child of God.
